Fatal shooting in University District the latest incident on a troubled corner of High Street

In early September, police said a man was brutally beaten to death near the COTA bus stop right outside the grocery store.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police are still looking for the person, or people, responsible for Saturday’s fatal shooting on North High Street in the University District.

The shooting happened around 2:40 p.m. at North High Street and Clark Place, near the University District Kroger.

The Columbus Division of Police identified Paul Allgood, 51, as the victim in the deadly shooting. Police did not have an update on a suspect when 10TV checked on Monday.

That shooting happened right around the time crowds of people were leaving the 'Shoe following a Buckeye win over Nebraska.

Saturday’s shooting is far from the first incident near that location on High Street.

In early September, police said a man was brutally beaten to death near the COTA bus stop right outside the grocery store. Adrian Ashley, 46, is accused in the murder.

That incident prompted 10TV to request police calls to the Kroger parking lot from January 2022 to September 2024.

The request filled nine pages. Most of the calls for service were for small disturbance calls. A closer look at the data shows 18 fights, 18 robberies, 14 assaults, a shots fired call and a stabbing.

In October 2022, police said Aniya Elie was shot and killed along High Street following a fight inside the Kroger.

In June, a mass shooting left 10 people injured over the summer just two blocks south of Saturday’s shooting. After that shooting in the 1100 block of North High Street, the city announced increased police patrols and mobile security cameras in an effort to deter crime.
