Police: Teen suspects in armed robbery, carjacking crash stolen vehicle in downtown Columbus

Police said the suspects, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds, were taken into custody at the scene of the crash.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four teens were taken into custody Sunday evening after a crash involving a stolen vehicle near the Ohio Statehouse, police said.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the area of East Main Street and Lilley Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on a report of an armed robbery and carjacking.

Sgt. James Fuqua said several suspects robbed a person at gunpoint and took their vehicle.

Officers later spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of East Fifth and Peters avenues. The patrol officers, along with a Columbus police helicopter unit, began to follow the vehicle.

Fuqua said officers made several attempts to stop the stolen vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, but they were unsuccessful. When the vehicle entered the downtown area, Fuqua said the officers following the suspects backed off.

The driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light at Third and Broad streets and crashed the vehicle, according to Fuqua. The vehicle spun out of control and came to a rest after hitting a parked car approximately 100 feet from the initial crash.

Police said no one sustained any serious injuries in the crash.

The suspects, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds, were detained at the scene. Each of them are charged with aggravated robbery, robbery and receiving stolen property.
