COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man was arrested weeks after a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in east Columbus. An arrest warrant was issued for another man in connection to the incident.
Dewarin Powell, 22, was taken into custody by Columbus police SWAT officers on Thursday and charged with murder in 27-year-old Remarcus Smith-Heagler’s death. Shavez Hargrave, 29, is wanted for murder.
On Aug. 21, the Columbus Division of Police was called to Stone Lodge Apartments on Cedar Drive for a reported crash. Officers later found out that Smith-Heagler was struck by gunfire.
Shell casings were found in front of the apartment complex where the shooting happened. Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said that officers learned that Heagler was in a car, and he tried driving around the complex until he hit a car on the other side of the property.
Heagler was taken to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition. He died two days later from his injuries.
Officers also found a dog in the car that died from gunshot wounds.
Records from Franklin County Municipal Court state that Hargrave and Powell had set up a drug deal with Smith-Heagler to meet at the apartment complex.
When Smith-Heagler arrived, court records said Powell and Hargrave attempted to rob him. Smith-Heagler was shot while trying to escape and eventually crashed his car.
Powell is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday at 9 a.m.
