Bodycam video shows police chase, response to Short North shooting

Columbus Police Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts told 10TV in an interview on Wednesday that five suspects are believed to have been involved.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Newly-released body camera video from a shooting in the Short North last month shows chaos unfolding as officers discover multiple victims and are led on a high-speed chase by a suspect.

The Columbus Division of Police responded to the shooting on North High Street in the overnight hours of June 23. Ten people, including two teenagers, were injured.

While some officers provided medical aid to the shooting victims, others pursued a white Honda Civic that had left the scene.

Columbus Police Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts told 10TV in an interview on Wednesday that five suspects are believed to have been involved based on the information they received from their investigation and tips from the community.

Here’s what the new bodycam video shows

Gunshots heard, pursuit of suspect vehicle begins

Gunfire can be heard going off around 2:26 a.m. in several of the officers’ body camera footage.

In one video, an officer walks over to a cruiser where another officer is in the driver’s seat.

The officer is heard saying, “I don’t know, that might have been fireworks.”

The other officer responds, “No, that was a gun.”

Through the cruiser’s windshield, another officer can be seen running in the street in the direction of the gunfire.

As several officers run or drive in the direction of the gunshots, people point out a white Honda Civic. Officers find the car and try to stop the driver and passenger.

In one video, officers are heard asking the driver and passenger several times to put their hands out the window.

The passenger is heard saying, “I’m shot” multiple times. The driver of the Honda then speeds off.

At least three cruisers begin pursuing immediately.

As the Honda got on Interstate 670, the officer in the passenger seat of the cruiser leading the chase aired that the Honda was going eastbound on I-670.

There was confusion among officers in other cruisers pursuing the Honda as to which direction the car was headed on I-670. The vehicle was heading westbound on I-670.

Several officers in other videos can be heard expressing frustration.

As the cruisers neared the Grandview Avenue exit, they lost sight of the Honda, airing “we lost him,” at 2:31 a.m.

Deangelo Fuller, 19, turned himself in to the police later that day and admitted to driving the Honda.

He is facing a felony charge of obstructing official business with the risk of physical harm. He was arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court two weeks ago and was given a $100,000 bond.

As several officers gave chase to the suspect vehicle, several other officers began looking for victims. Body camera video shows bystanders pointing out multiple victims lying on sidewalks or behind businesses.

Officers are seen applying tourniquets to victims. One even transports a victim to a nearby hospital in the back of his cruiser.

Several videos show people standing outside of bars or trying to help victims as officers arrive.

One officer, helping others provide aid to a gunshot victim, is flagged down by a bystander. The bystander tells them someone else was shot behind a business.

Other officers approach to help that victim and the officer is seen walking around to the front of the building, looking for an address to air for medics.

As he walks on the sidewalk in front of the business, he points out a shell casing to a nearby officer and finds a window shot out of a building.

Within a minute he spots another victim lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Medics were already providing aid.

“Was this aired yet? Because he’s the third victim,” the officer tells a medic.

Some shooting victims were taken to hospitals by friends.

Where the investigation stands now

Police say they believe that five suspects fired shots. There is a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspects in the shooting.
