COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police identified the victim who was fatally shot at an apartment complex near Dublin early Saturday morning as an 18-year-old woman.

Officers were called to the Karric Place apartments in the 6000 block of O’Sweeney Lane, just east of the Mall at Tuttle Crossing, for a reported shooting around 12:25 a.m. When they arrived, they found a woman, later identified as Kiara Nelson, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

According to initial reports, there was an argument between two people inside one of the apartments. Police say Nelson attempted to intervene and was shot.

Nelson was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m.

The suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Mika Cannon, was seen leaving the apartment in a hurry, according to court records. He was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder.

Annie Saksa, who lives down the street from where the shooting occurred, was upset to learn what happened.

“I just wish we could find more love in the world and not so much hate. It is sad, everyday people are almost conditioned to it anymore, you know,” Saksa said.

She moved into the neighborhood after living on the east side of Columbus.

“We worked really hard to get over to this side of town to feel safer and I honestly felt like I was there for a minute because it was an everyday thing there. Every night you heard them, you would be on the front porch and get down because you didn’t know where they were coming from, it was crazy,” she said.

Saksa said she has never had issues at the apartment complex.
