ODNR firefighters travel west to battle fires that filled our sky with smoke

Wildfires in California and Canada have issued an air quality alert and need for help.

The hazy sunrises and sunsets may have looked nice, but they are a product of something harmful happening on the other side of the country.

Hazardous wildfires in Canada and California have been impacting communities all this week. That smoke has lifted high into the atmosphere and traveled via the jet steam and higher winds.

The layer of that smoke has created a barrier scattering certain colors, which allows for our sunrises and set suns to look a bit different.

That smoke has also impacted our air quality.

Higher levels of pollutants, along with our calm and sunny conditions, may have made it difficult for those with respiratory problems. Active children, those with asthma or with a respiratory disease should limit time outside.

The smoke has also promoted help from local firefighters.

Three ODNR firefighters and an engine from Ohio made the trip to northern California to help battle the wildfires.

The firefighters have been out patrolling communities, creating digging lines and putting out local fires.

They have already put out several fires that could have erupted into a bigger hazard.

The ODNR Department of Forestry has been training its federal, state and local agencies on fire suppression and managing prescribed fires.
