Tornadoes in Ohio: Past the peak, but not done yet

Just because we are past the peak of tornado season, it doesn't mean you can discount storms later in the year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — While we typically think of spring and early summer as the prime severe weather and tornado season here in Ohio, it's important to remember that tornadoes don't have much respect for months of the year on a calendar.

In fact, after storms this week, we've added at least four more tornadoes to our already record-setting year here in Ohio, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. This takes our 2024 season up to 69 tornadoes since the start of the year.

The tornadoes listed on the map below do not include the two newest ones from Aug. 6.

Going back all the way to the 1950s, our most active tornado months are April through July. Our secondary months are March and August through November, with December through February being our most quiet time of the year.

Historically this means Ohio can see a tornado during any month of the year.

When calculated into an average, it's easy to see that tornadoes are becoming somewhat commonplace here in the Buckeye state. In fact, for the majority of the months out of the year, we can expect to see at least one tornado per month on average.

What this means for you at home is that you should always be ready when severe weather threatens the region. Just because we are past our peak season, doesn't mean tornadoes aren't still a possibility as storms roll through.

The 10 Weather Impact Team will continue to track and alert you to changes in the forecast and threats for severe weather.
