Look for a Blood Wolf Supermoon this week.

On Sunday night, look for the full moon;. Well, technically it’s not full until 12:16 a.m. on Monday morning, but that’s splitting hairs. This month’s moon is also called the "Full Wolf Moon" because this was typically the time of year hungry wolves could be heard howling on the outskirts of town. It’s also called the "Full Old Moon."

This month’s full moon has a few things that make it special. For one thing, a full lunar eclipse will happen late Sunday and early Monday morning. The Blood Moon will be visible throughout North and South America (among other places) which means if we get some clearing, you’ll be able to watch it if you feel like staying up late.

The total eclipse is slated to begin at 11:41 p.m. Sunday and end 12:43 a.m. Monday with the greatest eclipse hitting right around 12:12 a.m.

perigee

Another thing that makes this full moon special is the fact that at right around 3:00 p.m. Monday, the moon will be at perigee. That’s when it’s at the closest point to the Earth in its monthly orbit, 222,042 miles away to be exact. It’s the first Supermoon of the year and we could call it a Blood Wolf Supermoon.

Venus and Jupiter will be in conjunction on Tuesday morning. The two will be very close to one another in the predawn sky. Look in the southeast about an hour before sunrise to catch the pair.

If you’re out and about early late in the week or over the weekend look in the western sky for the daytime moon. Visible because this is the time in the lunar cycle that the moon rises at night and sets after sunrise. Take advantage of this fact to enjoy the moon when you don’t typically see it. Happy hunting!
