COLUMBUS, Ohio — The cycle of melting and then freezing this week has left our homes covered in ice and lingering snow.
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining. The water that backs up from this ice dam can then leak into your home causing damage. To spot this damage, professionals suggest keeping an eye on the interior and exterior of your home.
"Walk into rooms you don’t typically spend time in and walk the exterior parameter of your house during these winter months to see if there are any issues," said Matt Sherry with Feazel Roofing.
Soggy insulation, sagging ceilings, and staining are all signs of ice dam damage.
To prevent this build-up of ice, you can use heated cables, use a roof rake to clear the area or use a de-icing agent before the winter storm.
Roofing professionals suggest before the winter months that you inspect your roof and the outside of your home.
