Where and when to fill up your gas tank for Fourth of July travel in Ohio

Fuel analysts recommend filling up in Ohio if you're traveling out of state for the Fourth of July.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — This week, a record number of 71 million Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July.

If you're getting ready to hit the road for the holiday, expect gas prices to remain relatively the same throughout this week.

Right now, the average price per gallon in Columbus is up from last month, according to GasBuddy. Prices in Columbus are nearly 16 cents higher than a month ago and stand 17 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest station in Columbus was priced at $3.15 per gallon on Sunday while the most expensive was $3.79 per gallon. The national average price of gas has risen 5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.46 per gallon.

Fuel analysts with GasBuddy said prices could get slightly cheaper by next week, but not by much.

However, if you're traveling outside Ohio, you're better off filling up here than in neighboring states like Michigan and Pennsylvania.

"I would suggest shopping around because if you're not moving anywhere, there's a big variety in prices at some stations in Columbus. If you can wait to fill your tank until later this week, I suggest doing that" said Patrick de Haan, head of petroleum analysis with GasBuddy.

Haan added gas prices will likely see prices stay in the mid-$3 range throughout the summer.
