GROVE CITY, Ohio — As we prepare to set the clocks back this weekend, drivers can expect the roads to be much darker earlier.
Safety officials are reminding drivers to keep an extra eye out for pedestrians, and Grove City is working to make its streets more pedestrian-friendly.
This past summer, Grove City officials increased driver fines for distracted driving and driver violations in cross walks. City officials also did walk audits to figure out how to improve areas where crashes involving pedestrians keep happening.
Many of those crashes occurred along Broadway, Stringtown and Hoover roads. These areas are also where signage and signals needed improvements.
"Things like some of the audio signals weren't working, the crosswalks weren't working and some crosswalks that needed repaving," said Grove City Public Safety Director Kevin Teaford.
City officials say more than 50% of the city's crashes occurred in areas where signage needed to be improved. Now that many changes have been made, Grove City police officers are making an extra effort to cite drivers who are still not paying attention.
"Our officers are taking a very strict approach to violations that involve texting while driving, as well as violations that occur in an intersection," said Teaford.
