COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s the debate that won’t go away: when should you start decorating for the holidays? Before Thanksgiving? Or after the turkey is all gone? It seems people are as divided on this topic as they are on whether to say “soda versus pop.”
We posted a poll to the 10TV Nextdoor page and found more than half of our neighbors say bring on the holiday spirit. 54% voted the earlier the better, while 36% said it’s better to wait until after Thanksgiving. Only 11% said they don’t decorate for the holidays.
With almost everything in 2020 being turned down, it seems some die-hards are making exceptions this year.
“I used to say “no way” before well into December,” says Sheila E who lives in the Dennison Place neighborhood of Columbus. “But 2020, let’s just go all out for as long as possible! Bring on some light and joy! Leave them up all winter!”
Adrianne W normally waits until after Thanksgiving to decorate her home in the Short North but said “this year, with spending all our time at home, we wanted that boost of holiday magic early!”
Kelly K shared a photo of her decorated family space in Schumacher Place, writing, “I’m usually very strict to the day after Thanksgiving, but this year, I just needed the cheer in my house.”
Others on NextDoor appears to be a bit mixed.
“I’m starting to hang outdoor lights this weekend but won’t turn them on until after Thanksgiving,” Tracy G wrote on Nextdoor. “My tree goes up Thanksgiving night and I’ll add more decorations that weekend too.”
Jeremy M. lives in the Franklin Park-Olde Towne East Nextdoor neighborhood. He says,” This is a hard one. I have always been firmly in the wait group, but this year I vote for never too early. We all need something to uplift our spirits and holiday decorations are always heart-warming,”.
The next debate, of course, is when to take down the holiday decorations.. but that story is for another day. We’ll let you know.
