COLUMBUS, Ohio — The New Albany boys soccer team defeated Walsh Jesuit on Sunday evening and won their first-ever state championship title in the 2024 OHSAA Boys Division II state tournament.
The game at Historic Crew Stadium ended with a score of 1-0 after the New Albany Eagles secured a 5-3 victory in penalties.
It was the Eagles' third title appearance — the other appearances happening in 2020 and 2022.
New Albany Athletics posted a statement on its website saying in part, “This monumental achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the New Albany community. Fans, families, and alumni rallied around the team, creating an electric atmosphere at Crew Stadium and throughout the journey.”
The school credited goalkeeper Wyatt Butler for his composure and skill in goal being instrumental in the win.
“Head Coach Johnny Ulry and his staff deserve immense credit for their leadership and preparation. From the opening match of the season to the final whistle of the championship game, the team embraced a culture of excellence, displaying relentless commitment to their goals,” the statement read.
