COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Crew announced on Wednesday their match with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will be played in Cleveland next year.
The highly anticipated match will be played at Huntington Bank Field on April 19.
“The Columbus Crew-Inter Miami match at Huntington Bank Field is an incredible opportunity for the Crew and our supporters as it allows us collectively to grow the game of soccer and elevate our Club throughout Ohio,” said Crew President of Business Operations Josh Glessing.
Glessing said Huntington Bank Field can welcome significantly more Crew fans and it gives the club a chance to interact with fans in the northeastern part of the Buckeye State.
Crew fans don't appear to be excited about decision. Multiple Black and Gold faithful took to social media to express their disapproval of the move, many of whom called the decision a "cash grab."
Some commenters said they understood the move, referencing the significant difference in the capacity at each stadium. Huntington Bank Field can hold more than 67,000 guests while Lower.com Field holds over 20,000. The game will likely draw more fans since Messi, one of the world's greatest soccer players, is expected to play.
The Crew says season ticket members will have tickets to the game. The seats "will be in an equal, or better location, to your seats at Lower.com Field." Season ticket members can opt in at a later date for a complimentary parking pass as well as a food and beverage voucher. The voucher is good for a hot dog, chips and a drink (beer or soda) for each season ticket seat.
Tickets will be available to the public on Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. Supporters who want to secure their preferred seats can register here for pre-sale access.
