DeWine announces Saturday as Columbus Crew Day ahead of MLS Cup Final

Columbus is home to one of the original 10 Major League Soccer clubs.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ahead of the Major League Soccer Cup Final, Gov. Mike DeWine announced that Saturday will be recognized as Columbus Crew Day in Ohio.

The Crew is taking on Los Angeles FC at Lower.com Field in the championship match. The match starts at 4 p.m.

DeWine said the state is behind the Crew as they play in the final. Both the governor and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted signed a proclamation ahead of the game, encouraging Ohioans to cheer on the team as they attempt to become league champions once again.

“They’ve had a great season, and we wish them luck as they work to bring home a third championship! Glory to Columbus," DeWine said.

Columbus is home to one of the original 10 Major League Soccer clubs. The team was officially named the Columbus Crew in 1995 — one year after they were created.

They played their first game in 1996 and were the first team to open a soccer-specific stadium, now known as the Historic Crew Stadium.

Lower.com Field became the team’s new home in 2021, and in 2022, Wilfried Nancy took the job as the team’s new head coach. Nancy has led a successful season, powering through playoffs with a record of 16-9-9.
