Rick Derringer To Perform "Hang On Sloopy" During Ohio State Home Opener

To mark the 50th anniversary of the tune, Derringer will perform Sloopy during pregame with a 900 piece marching band backing him up.

It's the song that never fails to get Buckeye fans on their feet.

From time outs to end of the third quarter, "Hang on Sloopy" is a battle cry for Buckeye Nation.

It's the first song Rick Derringer's band The McCoys ever released and it went straight to number one.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the tune he recorded at age 17, Derringer will perform Sloopy during pregame with a 900 piece marching band backing him up.

“People in Ohio have a right to be proud,” says the man born in Ft. Recovery, Ohio. “This is the only state with a state rock song."

Even the Rolling Stones paid homage to Sloopy, putting their own spin on it when they played Ohio Stadium earlier this summer.

When I asked Derringer who Sloopy was, he called it the “Million Dollar Question.”

Derringer says the man who wrote the song, Burt Burns, coined it from the Cuban nickname for girls.

Another version of the story says it's named after a woman who tended a bar in Ohio - Dorothy Sloop.

But no matter the truth, Buckeyes and the state of Ohio will continue to claim it as their own and it'll get cheers for easily another 50 years.
