PARIS, France — A former Ohio State swimmer is now a two-time Olympic champion.

Hunter Armstrong won gold on Saturday as a member of Team USA's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team. The group finished first in the finals with a time of 3:09.28 to beat out Australia and Italy.

Jack Alexy and Chris Guiliano swam the first two legs, with Armstrong carrying the third leg. He turned the fastest leg of all to give Caeleb Dressel a commanding lead to work with at the end.

This marked Team USA's first gold medal of the 2024 Games.

Armstrong was one of four Buckeyes to compete on the first full day of Olympic events.

Armstrong previously won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the 4x100 medley relay after helping Team USA qualify for the event finals.

He will be back in action on Sunday in the 100m backstroke.

The women's team took home silver in the same event, losing to Australia.

The Australian quartet of Mollie O'Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris set an Olympic record with a winning time of 3:28.92.

The Americans — Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske and Simone Manuel — rallied to take silver in 3:30.20. They edged China's team of Yang Junxuan, Cheng Yujie, Zhang Yufei and Wu Qingfeng by a tenth of a second.
