Linden-McKinley HS basketball team can't play in city championship due to scheduling error

Columbus City Schools posted on Facebook saying OHSAA regulations only allow schools to play 22 regular season games and LMHS has surpassed that.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Linden-McKinley High School boys basketball team will not be able to compete in the Columbus City League Boys Basketball Championship because of a scheduling issue.

Columbus City Schools posted on Facebook saying OHSAA regulations only allow schools to play 22 regular season games. However, Linden-McKinley has already surpassed that, making them ineligible to play in the championship game.

"I want to express our deepest apologies for this oversight. We understand the disappointment and frustration this error has caused, and we empathize with the disappointment and regret many are experiencing," said Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman.

Chapman said she initiated an investigation to identify what cause the scheduling error.

"Our priority is to understand what went wrong and implement measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future. We are committed to upholding the integrity of our athletic programs and providing fair and equitable opportunities for all participating teams," Chapman said.

OHSAA spokesperson Tim Stried told 10TV a high school basketball team cannot play more than 22 regular season games. The city championship game would count as a regular season game. Stried said that number has been in effect for about 10 years and the rule has not been violated or questioned by any schools recently.
