COLUMBUS, Wis. — Ohio State running back Miyan Williams will be out for the remainder of the 2023 football season, head coach Ryan Day said Tuesday.

Day made the announcement in his weekly press conference, saying that Williams underwent a procedure for an undisclosed injury that will end his season.

“I feel really bad for Miyan that he’s not going to be able to play," Day said. "Miyan’s done a lot of great things for us and that’s a big hit for that room and our team."

Williams played in six games this season for the Buckeyes, rushing for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 49 attempts. He also caught four passes for 42 yards.

Williams was out for the Wisconsin game last week. He rushed for a season-high 62 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes 20-12 win over Penn State while filling in for TreVeyon Henderson.

Henderson made his return against the Badgers in Madison, running for 162 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

Williams still has a year of eligibility left with the extra year given to all players after the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Day said Williams has not yet decided if he will return to Ohio State next season.

"I'm sure he's considering what his next steps are here but I think it's all so new he's still trying to just focus on his rehab," Day said. "We'll kind of address that as we get closer to the end of the season."

The Buckeyes are nursing some other key injuries.

Quarterback Kyle McCord was limping on his left ankle after last week’s game. Day said McCord showed “toughness” playing through the injury. He didn't say how that could affect his availability for Saturday's game at Rutgers.

Receiver Emeka Egbuka, who has missed three games with an ankle injury, was healthy enough to play last week but was held out as a precaution, Day said. Egbuka is practicing this week.

Starting safety Lathan Ransom was injured in last week's game, but Day said it's not clear yet how long he will be out.

Backup quarterback Devin Brown was expected to return to practice in some capacity this week after suffering an ankle injury in a pile up at the goal line in the Oct. 21 win over Penn State.

“Once you get to November, that's what's going to happen," Day said. “You got to play depth, and guys got work through those types of things.”
