Jeremiah Smith ties Ohio State's freshman receiving touchdown record

EUGENE, Ore. — Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has tied a record that has stood for 40 years.

Smith caught his eighth touchdown on Saturday against Nebraska, tying the freshman record held by former Buckeye and NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter. Carter caught eight touchdowns during his freshman campaign in 1984.

Quarterback Will Howard found Smith 60 yards down the field for the record-tying touchdown.

Smith has been as advertised since he arrived out of Miami Gardens, Florida. Coming into Saturday's game with Nebraska, he's averaging just over 90 yards a game with seven receiving touchdowns. He also scored a rushing touchdown against Michigan State last month.

That's not the only record Smith is after. He had 553 receiving yards coming into Saturday's game. That's just 95 yards shy of the freshman receiving record which was also set by Carter, who had 648 yards.

At this rate, Smith will shatter that record as Ohio State still has five games left to play for the regular season.
