Ohio State head coach Ryan Day announces team captains for 2024 season

Linebacker Cody Simon, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end Jack Sawyer were voted as team captains by their teammates.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day announced the captains who will lead the Buckeyes during the 2024 football season.

Linebacker Cody Simon, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end Jack Sawyer were voted as team captains by their teammates. Simon was also the recipient of the Block O jersey this year.

“The great news is we have a great group of leaders,” Day said. “Just because you are not a captain doesn’t mean you’re not a leader. You’re still a leader. Leadership is earned and a lot of you guys have earned leadership. There are a lot of captains on this team. The players did a great job voting.”

WR Emeka Egbuka

Egbuka enters the 2024 campaign as a contender for national honors. He enters the season with 124 career receptions (T14th at Ohio State) for 1,857 yards (16th at Ohio State) and within striking distance of both career records at Ohio State. He also has scored 14 touchdowns.

Egbuka, who has earned two all-Big Ten honors and was a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award in 2022, graduated in December with his degree in marketing. A second-team Academic All-American in 2022, he has also been honored twice as an Academic all-Big Ten Conference honoree and three times as an OSU Scholar-Athlete.

RB TreVeyon Henderson

Henderson is expected to be one of the top running backs in college football in 2024. He has 2,745 career rushing yards and 37 total touchdowns. He is coming off a first-team all-Big Ten Conference season in 2023 when he rushed for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Henderson, a two-time Academic all-Big Ten honoree and OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in sports industry, enters the 2024 season ranked 15th in school history in career rushing yards and is just 808 yards from Top 5 status among Buckeyes. He ranks in a tie for eighth in Ohio State history (with Tim Spencer and Hopalong Cassady) with 37 touchdowns scored and is 21 touchdowns away from Pete Johnson's 48-year-old school record of 58 touchdowns.

DE Jack Sawyer

Sawyer extends a streak of central Ohio natives named an Ohio State captain to six consecutive years. Expected to be one of the top defensive ends in college football in 2024, Sawyer has played in all 39 games the past three seasons and has accumulated 85 career tackles, 19.5 tackles-for-loss (second among current Buckeyes) and a team-leading 14 quarterback sacks.

Sawyer had a fine 2023 campaign as a full-time starter: ranking second among all defensive linemen with 48 tackles and leading all linemen with 24 solo stops. He also had team-high totals of 10 tackles-for-loss, for 46 yards in losses, and 6.5 quarterback sacks. He is an Academic all-Big Ten honoree and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in sport industry.

LB Cody Simon

Simon enters the 2024 season having recorded 147 career tackles and ranking among the team’s Top 5 tacklers twice in the last three years. He is a Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar, a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a three-time Academic all-Big Ten honoree who has graduated with his degree in finance and is currently working on a master's degree in human development and family services.

The Buckeyes’ first game is at home against Akron on Aug. 31. Kickoff starts at 3:30 p.m.
