COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jeremiah Smith holds two more Ohio State freshman records.
The wide receiver caught his 42nd reception during the first quarter of Saturday's game against Purdue, breaking a record set by Cris Carter during his freshman year in 1984.
Then with under a minute to go until halftime, Smith caught his ninth touchdown of the year, surpassing another freshman record that was once held by Carter.
He was also given a commemorative game ball to celebrate the feat.
Smith has arguably been Ohio State's top offensive weapon since arriving in Columbus.
He broke another freshman in record last week, surpassing Carter's 1984 record of 648 receiving yards in a season. Smith eclipsed that number against Penn State, entering Saturday's game with 678 receiving yards.
Last week's game against Penn State was the first time Smith did not score a touchdown this season.
There's only one other record Carter holds that Smith has not been able to catch yet - most receiving yards in a game by a freshman. Carter holds that record with 172 yards. Smith's high on the season is 119 yards, which he achieved against Michigan State.
