COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State's 2014 national championship team was honored during the game against Nebraska on Saturday.
After the first quarter, the team was celebrated with an on-field recognition for their accomplishments.
Former head coach Urban Meyer was lifted up and carried off the field after the 10-year anniversary celebration. Cardale Jones, the third-string QB who helped lead the Buckeyes to victory, was among the players in attendance.
The 2014 team made history as the first team to win the championship in the College Football Playoff.
The Buckeyes, as the No. 4 seed, played No. 1 Alabama in the CFP semifinals.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott put the nail in the coffin when he ripped off an 85-yard touchdown with just three minutes to go, putting the game out of reach for the Crimson Tide. Ohio State upset Alabama 42-35, with Elliott having 230 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
Ohio State wasn't done. The Buckeyes beat the Ducks 42-20 on the back of Elliott's four touchdowns and 246 yards.
The Buckeyes went into the year with Braxton Miller as the starting QB but he suffered shoulder injury before the year began. Freshman J.T. Barrett led the Buckeyes to an 11-1 season but suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
The Buckeyes relied on Jones, who had no real significant playing experience, to help guide Ohio State through the Big Ten championship and the playoffs. Jones played well, tossing for nearly 500 yards and two touchdowns between the two playoff games.
