Brutus Buckeye is hitting the half-century mark and Ohio State is planning a year-long celebration.

The beloved mascot made his debut in the fall of 1965 when students launched efforts to create one for the school since it didn’t have one.

His first appearance happened October 30 against Minnesota for homecoming. A group of students built a papier-mâché mascot and marched him into the game and was a big hit among fans.

Shortly after the game, a contest was held to pick a name with Brutus winning out.

Brutus has undergone a number of changes, including one with a fiberglass head, and has continued to grow into a known figure who represents more than just athletics.

The university said a number of groups will host different events for the 50th birthday during the year and all of them will focus on raising money for scholarships to students who play the role of Brutus.

Brutus’ birthday celebration begins Thursday at Ohio Stadium during Student Life’s Buckeye Kick-Off.

He will also serve as Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade October 9 and receive a special recognition during the November 7 game against Minnesota.
