A West High School student was sentenced Friday for slitting a classmate's throat.
Marcus Solis III was sentenced to the Ohio Department of Youth Services until 21st birthday, 10TV News reported.
Solis, 14, admitted in October to bringing a weapon to a school assembly and slitting fellow student Tyquan Green-Tucker's throat, 10TV's Jessa Goddard reported.
Solis' defense attorney Mark Collins said that Solis had a substance abuse problem at the time of the attack and was a gang member. Collins said that Solis was being bullied and threatened during the assembly.
"Marcus panicked (and) didn't know what to do," Collins said. "He took the box cutter and he struck back."
Solis apologized to the court and to Green-Tucker, who was not present but made a full recovery, Goddard reported.
Solis was charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon in a school safety zone and one count of felonious assault.
Solis already has served 99 days in juvenile detention, and could be eligible for release at the end of his first year if he is able to demonstrate progress in his education and behavioral development, Goddard reported.
