The Radio Television Digital News Association announced on Thursday that WBNS-10TV has been awarded one of the television industry's most coveted awards for journalistic excellence.
The station was recognized for its one-hour special, "Saving Sarah: The Knox County Tragedy One Year Later," which recounted the tragedy that rocked a central Ohio community in November 2010.
The special was voted best large market "Video News Documentary" in a region that includes all television stations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.
The special took viewers through the series of events that occurred when a mother, her two children and a family friend vanished from their Knox County home. 10TV unveiled new details about the investigation that had never been disclosed publicly, including how investigators raced against the clock to save the young girl, Sarah Maynard, who was held captive by the man responsible for their disappearance.
"This is an incredible achievement," said WBNS-10TV Director of News Elbert Tucker. "The staff at 10TV continues to work at a level that leads the way in this market, and I'm extremely proud their work is being recognized with such a prestigious award."
The Edward R. Murrow Awards are named for the longtime CBS journalist, remembered as one of the most respected people in news. The RTDNA oversees the selection process and names the winners.
The RTDNA presents the Murrow Awards annually to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism and recognize news organizations that set the standard for excellence in the broadcast news industry. Regional Murrow Award winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition, which will be judged this summer.
