WOOSTER, Ohio (AP) — A vegan teacher has settled a lawsuit with the northeast Ohio school district that fired him last year over a Facebook post critical of dairy farming practices.

Court documents filed Tuesday show Keith Allison settled the lawsuit against the Green Local School District in Wayne County for $17,500. About $6,700 will go to the American Civil Liberties Union and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals which represented him in the action.

Allison claimed he was fired last August after being told a Facebook post that included a photograph of baby cows offended local dairy farmers. Widespread media attention and a social media campaign led to his reinstatement.

The district said in the settlement it recognizes the right of staff "to engage in free speech outside the educational setting."
