A few days after announcing that it was laying off hundreds of workers, Value City DepartmentStores filed for bankruptcy over the weekend, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported on Monday.

A company spokesperson said that declining sales and an increasingly competitive discount retailenvironment forced the company to close its doors.

There was no word on when the company's stores would close for business, but shoppers told 10TVNews on Monday that employees at a west side store told them it would happen in about two to threeweeks, Mallett reported.

There are about 113 Value City Stores nationwide. Two of those stores are located inColumbus.

The bankruptcy filing does not impact Value City Furniture stores, which are separately ownedand operated by Jay Schottenstein, Mallett reported.
