Two South Side Schools To Close After School Board Vote

The Columbus City School Board approves a major change that will impact 3,000 students next year. Learn more.

Three central Ohio schools felt the reality of a school board vote on Wednesday.

The Columbus City School Board made the final vote Tuesday on a plan that would close Moler and Heyl Elementary Schools and change Southmoor Middle School, 10TV’s Tanisha Mallett reported.

Under the plan, Moler and Heyl Elementary Schools will close. The students who attended those schools will move into the Southmoor Middle School building, which will become an elementary school.

Tom Cerrito said he loves everything about Heyl Elementary School, where his two sons attend.

"The teacher's are very nice there, they have a lot of friends there and it was walking distance to my home." Cerrito said.

His sons will attend Southmoor Middle School next year.

“I am not happy that they are going to Southmoor,” Cerrito said.

The seventh and eighth grade students who attend Southmoor Middle School would then go to South High School next school year.

Cerrito’s fifth-grader, Joey, said that he is nervous about the change because it means he will be in a high school building in seventh grade.

“There will be a lot of new people there, and I don't know about the new people there if they are going to beat me up or anything,” Joey said.

Tom Cerrito said that he is worried about safety and is considering home schooling his sons.

Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene Harris said that she was scheduled to hold meetings to discuss the type of academic program that will work best at the new South High School.
