The Champaign County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting at West Liberty High School.
The Sheriff's Office said one student, 16-year-old Logan Cole, was hurt and another student at the school is in custody.
The shooting was reported Friday morning at the complex for both high school and elementary students in the West Liberty-Salem Local School District, roughly 45 miles northwest of Columbus.
The Sheriff’s Office said a 17-year-old student shot Cole with a shotgun multiple times at the school after 8 a.m.
Cole, a junior, is being treated at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. His family told superintendent Kraig Hissong that Cole is in critical but stable condition.
Hissong also said the family is encouraged about what they are being told at the hospital.
The identity of the suspect has not been released.
Champaign County District Attorney Kevin Talebi said the suspect is charged with felonious assault. He said the suspect is scheduled to be in juvenile court on Monday but could be charged as an adult.
The Sheriff's Office said when deputies arrived at the school, staff had the suspect pinned down which may have prevented more people from being injured.
The Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened in a hallway. Students were dismissed to their parents one at a time from buses at Lions Park.
The family of Logan Cole issued the following statement:
“We are thankful for the Lord’s protective hand on our son. We are also grateful for the outpouring of support from our family, friends, and community. We would like to ask for continued prayers for Logan. Also, we’d like to encourage prayer for the community, the other student, and his family. We are certain they have been deeply hurt as well. We are confident that God has a purpose and plan through this tragedy.”
