Space Heaters Spark Several Fires Across Central Ohio

The cold weather is bringing to light the problem of improper use of space heaters.

Firefighters have spent a busy week responding to fires that could have been prevented.

The main culprit has been space heaters.

Firefighters responded to flames at a car wash in Canal Winchester on Friday morning. The blaze broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the 500 block of West Waterloo Street.

When they arrived, firefighters found flames and smoke erupting from the attic over the automatic wash portion of the building.

It was a space heater that sparked the blaze. It was being used by the owner to keep the equipment warm.

Firefighters battled freezing temperatures and used a ladder truck to douse the flames and fight defensively. The frigid temperatures made the water turn to ice, creating a big problem for firefighters.

A fire company in Groveport on Tuesday responded to a fire at a home that a heater started.

The homeowner tried to get the fire out by dumping a fish tank on it.

“The plug was still plugged-in, in which made the fire kept coming back up. Every time I’d get it down, it would come back up,” said Jeff Daniel.

No one was hurt in either fire.

But firefighters want to remind residents about the potential dangers of using a space heater, now that they have led to multiple fires this week.
