The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office terminated the employment of a Corporal in the Communications Division on Monday after an investigation proved the Corporal knew about a covered stop sign and did nothing about it.

An internal investigation proved that the Corporal, Kimberly Chapman, had received two calls about a stop sign that was covered in plastic prior to a fatal crash at state Route 56 and Huber Hitler Road, 10TV’s Tanisha Mallett reported.

Investigators said the first call made was taken by Chapman. The second call that came in, made roughly two hours later, was handled by another dispatcher.

The Sheriff’s Office said the dispatcher gave the information to Chapman, who acknowledged that she would take care of it.

Authorities said that the Corporal failed to notify the Ohio Department of Transportation.

According to investigators, a car passed into the intersection without stopping and was struck by an SUV pulling a boat on Aug. 17.  A passenger in the car, Mary Spangler, 85, was killed.

The car's driver, Jeanne Shea, 80, remained hospitalized in serious condition on Monday.

Authorities said the sign was covered by teens as a prank.

Seth R. Stonerock, 19, and Derek W. Greenlee, 18, were charged with involuntary manslaughter and tampering with a traffic control device on Aug. 25.
