A sheriff said that a jobseeker from Florida was killed and another from South Carolina was shot after responding to a craigslist ad for a job on an Ohio cattle farm.
Noble County Sheriff Stephen Hannum said that the victims had responded to a bogus listing for a job as a caretaker over cattle on a 688-acre farm. He suspects that robbery was the motive, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported.
Hannum said Thursday that two men had been taken into custody after cadaver dogs found the body of the Florida man this week in a shallow grave in a remote area.
According to Hannum, the search came after the South Carolina man escaped from the same area on Nov. 6 and police found a grave they believe had been dug for him.
The names of the two men were not released, but the first suspect was charged with attempted murder and it was not clear what the second suspect was charged with, Landers reported.
The surviving victim said that he and the two men in custody were walking on a road towards a cattle farm when he heard a gun cock. The victim said he began running for his life when he heard the sound.
The victim spent seven hours hiding in the woods before making it to a home in Fulda where deputies were called.
Hannum said that there was only one victim, until six days later when a woman heard about a shooting and called police to report that her twin brother was missing.
The woman told police that her brother had responded to a Craigslist ad about a job. Investigators then went back to the scene where the surviving victim had been shot to find the second victim in a shallow grave, Landers reported.
According to Hannum, the first man in custody was found by tracing his e mail account used to communicate with the first victim.
Hannum said that the names of the men in custody could be released as soon as Friday.
