A disabled homeowner who shot and killed a man who allegedly broke into his home and robbed him said on Monday that he never thought he would have to use his guns for deadly force.
John Mutter said that he awoke on Sunday to a shotgun in his face.
“I never woke up to a gun in my face and somebody with a mask,” Mutter said. “I thought he was going to kill me.”
Mutter, who was in a vehicle crash 13 months ago that broke his back and left him in a wheelchair and with chronic pain, said that he just learned last week that he was going to lose his home, located in the 400 block of Sunset Street.
Johnstown Police Chief Don Corbin said that Brian Dyer broke into Mutter’s home and stole medicine and $50.
Before he left, he woke Mutter up and asked for his guns.
Mutter, a former deer hunter, said that he had 20 guns locked in a safe in another room. He instead told Dyer that they were in a corner.
“When he turned his head, I grabbed the shotgun and held it up like that, and I had a gun under the blanket. I pulled the gun out and shot him a couple of times,” Mutter said.
Corbin said that he thought someone knew that Mutter kept his front door unlocked so people could help him in an emergency. The chief said that he also thought that Dyer knew about the guns and may have had an accomplice.
“So, he had some knowledge of the residence, so we’re assuming someone gave him that knowledge. So, we would like to find out who that may be,” Corbin said.
Mutter said that he was uncertain what the future holds for him.
“I don’t know yet,” Mutter said.
Corbin said that if police identify an accomplice, there could be an arrest and charges.
