Regal Cinemas Now Screening Bags At Theaters

The next time you head out to the movies, be prepared to have your personal bags searched.

The next time you head out to the movies, be prepared to have your personal bags searched.

In the wake of movie theater shootings in Aurora, Lafayette and more recently in Nashville, safety seems to be a growing concern for movie goers, like Passion Reese.

"You walk in there, you get nervous," she said. "You just think that that day is not going to be 'the day'."

Now, Regal Entertainment Group says it's taking action.

The company released a statement saying it has "begun to check bags in the wake of numerous shootings at theaters around the country. A procedure it acknowledged on its website was 'not without flaws' and would inconvenience guests but provide better security."

Madeleine Devitt, who was at the Regal cinema at Georgesville Square Wednesday, sees the potential in the system, even though she said they did not check her bag.

"I think it's a good thing to check bags," she said. "Obviously people have gotten through and things have happened."

Elaina Rockenfelder sees the uncomfortable feeling of insecurity.

"In a way it could be a good thing, but I don't like people personally going through my stuff," she said.

Reese said it's a start, but more needs to be done. She believes it's too easy to get around this new security measure.

"They can put them in their socks, they can put them inside their pants," she said. "Females hide them inside their bras."

Rockenfelder believes more people might feel violated by the new rule and that could keep people from a night out at the movies.

"I think a lot of people are going to stop coming to the movies because of it," she said.
