Ramps To I-71 From I-270 E Reopen After Semi Carrying Sports Drinks Crashes (N Side)

The ramp from I-270 eastbound to I-71 north and south, on the north side, are back open after a semi crash. Learn more.

A crash which left thousands of gallons of sports drink on a heavily travelled area of Columbus slowed down commuters Thursday morning.

The ramp from Interstate 270 eastbound to I-71 south and north on the north side reopened at about 9 a.m. Thursday.

The ramps were closed around 3 a.m. on because of an overturned semi that was carrying more than 30,000 pounds of sports drinks.

The crash was discovered by an off-duty officer.

According to crews on the scene, the semi driver was traveling east on I-270 and was getting off at I-71 when the driver fell asleep and struck the guard rail on the ramp.

The semi split in two and landed at the spot where the exit ramp splits into I-71 north and south.

The driver finally came to a stop about 100 yards from where he left the other half of the trailer.

A fire crew was called to the scene because of a ruptured gas tank on the side of the semi. The clean-up of the sports drink slowed down the efforts to clear the road.

It took around six hours to unload the sports drink into another truck and move the cab and sections of the trailer.

It was bad timing for an area that’s heavily traveled during the morning commute.

No injuries were reported and the name of the driver was not released. He will face a number of traffic violations.
