Police said on Tuesday that they were investigating a dog-on-dog attack that occurred earlier this week.

Jeffrey Folkerth said that he and his toy poodle, Fritzi, were walking in Northam Park where dogs are allowed off leash after 8 p.m.

"All of a sudden, Fritzi was being picked up by this big dog and was being carried away, running away like a little toy," Folkerth said.

The toy poodle was no match for the much bigger dog, he said.

"I started yelling, 'Drop my dog,'" Folkerth said.  "I was chasing the dog."

According to Folkerth, Fritzi was eventually released.  His dog suffered a puncture wound and some separated ribs, 10TV's Justin Moss reported.

"I recognized the dog as a dog that we knew had actually killed another dog in the neighborhood earlier this year," Folkerth said.

The attack occurred in April when the family claimed their Maltese puppy was snatched and killed by the other dog.

The owner of the dog that has attacked said he was sorry and told Moss that it would not go to public parks anymore.  He also said that he might get rid of the dog.

"This dog is not safe," Folkerth said.  "It's not safe to have that dog on city streets where they could hurt other dogs, other children. I mean this is a very big dog."

Folkerth said he was awaiting the police investigation and was considering legal options.
