JD Vance, other national figures issue statements after Biden withdraws from race

JD Vance was the latest major political figure to comment on Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race. Barack Obama and the Clintons also released statements.

OHIO, USA — Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance called President Joe Biden "the worst President" in his lifetime in his first statement after Biden announced his departure from the 2024 election race on Sunday afternoon.

Vance, who former President Donald Trump selected as his running mate last week, took shots at both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in his statement posted on X, saying that Harris "has been right there with him every step of the way."

The statement criticized Harris' actions as vice president, saying, "Over the last four years she co-signed Biden's open border and green scam policies that drove up the cost of housing and groceries. She owns all of these failures..."

Trump issued a statement on his social media platform Truth Social saying Biden was "not fit to run for President."

"We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly," Trump said in part, before concluding with "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

After losing to Biden in 2020, the two were set for a rematch in the November general election.

In a lengthy post on Medium Sunday, former President Barack Obama thanked Biden for his service.

"For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the torch to a new nominee is surely one of the toughest in his life," Obama added.

First Lady Jill Biden responded by reposting the president’s letter announcing his decision and adding red heart emojis.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton thanked Biden "for all he has accomplished, standing up for America time and again, with his North Star always being what's best for the country."

In their statement, the Clintons also endorsed Harris and vowed to "do whatever we can to support her."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement that Biden “has not only been a great president and a great legislative leader but he is a truly amazing human being."

“His decision of course was not easy, but he once again put his country, his party, and our future first,” said Schumer, who traveled to Rehoboth Beach earlier this month to speak to Biden directly about the race. “Joe, today shows you are a true patriot and great American.”
