A bill in the Ohio House would designate the sugar cookie as the official cookie of Ohio.
House Bill 235 states “The cookie with the main ingredients of sugar, flour, butter, eggs, and vanilla, commonly known as the sugar cookie, is adopted as the official cookie of the state.”
The bill is sponsored by Representatives Jessica Miranda (D-Forest Park) and Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati).
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports third-graders at Sycamore Township Catholic School helped create the bill.
The newspaper reports that the students spent months researching state cookies and which would fit Ohio the best and approached lawmakers with their idea.
In their research, they found pioneers in southwest Ohio traded sugar as a commodity.
