GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — Grandview Heights Schools placed a $69.5 million bond on the ballot this November and voters appeared to have approved it.
The bond issue included $52.2 million for the construction of a new Stevenson Elementary School and $17.3 million for Phase 1 and 2 improvements to the district’s K-12 athletic complex.
In March 2024, a committee recommended moving forward with a new Stevenson Elementary and Phase 1 and 2 of the Athletic Complex improvements. The recommendation included deferring the third and final phase of the complex in anticipation of future public utility tax revenue.
According to the district, Stevenson Elementary School was built in 1926 and presents continual maintenance challenges. A planning committee unanimously recommended a new Stevenson Elementary School to expand classroom sizes, build a bigger gymnasium and improve on other critical spaces in the building.
As for the athletic complex, the district said the complex was constructed in the 1920s, at a time when there were only four varsity sports for male athletes only. Now, the district has 22 varsity sports for male and female athletes.
The complex was found to be lacking facilities to support all of the sports, lacking handicapped accessibility and in need of immediate repair.
The Board of Education and Administration will now talk to community members, staff and stakeholders in an iterative process over the next year to design the facilities. Construction on the elementary school would be slated for the 2026-2027 school year and would be completed for the start of the 2027-2028 school year.
District officials are expected to work with community stakeholders and design professionals on the athletic complex design and construction schedule. It’s unclear what that timeline will look like.
