COLUMBUS, Ohio — Franklin County residents on Tuesday voted to approve a levy proposed by the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
The 1.5 mill additional continuing levy will bring in more than $39 million during the first year of collection to help fund operating expenses for the library's 24 buildings. Property taxes will increase next year for Franklin County residents.
This was the first time in 13 years that the Columbus Metropolitan Library proposed a levy on the ballot. Since the levy passed, library officials said they won't ask voters to provide more financial support for at least 10 years.
The library issued the following statement following its passage:
"On behalf of our passionate and dedicated staff, I am grateful to the voters for recognizing the value of Columbus Metropolitan Library and investing in the critical work that we do. This support is not taken lightly.
We’ve served the central Ohio community for 150 years – through two pandemics and two world wars. Through it all, Columbus Metropolitan Library remains a constant presence, providing equal access to all while continually innovating.
I am truly grateful for the volunteer support we’ve received during this levy campaign, as well as for our Library Board of Trustees, Foundation Board, Friends of the Library, elected officials, donors and community leaders who have contributed to the vitality of our library system.
Ever since our Main Library opened with the words “Open to All” carved in stone above the front entrance, Columbus Metropolitan Library has upheld the philosophy of service and accessibility. We believe today’s vote is a reflection of the value our customers receive from all locations and service points. We pledge to uphold the same standard moving forward."
