Police: Doctor shot outside Massillon hospital has died, shooter killed himself

A preliminary investigation showed both men shared a mutual love interest, according to police.

Police say a doctor who was shot outside a Massillon hospital has died after undergoing emergency surgery.

Massillon police were called to the Affinity Medical Center just after 2 p.m. Monday.

Upon arrival, officers observed two men in close proximity lying in the parking lot with gunshot wounds.

The first, identified as Michael Wood, had a handgun in his hand.

Police said medical personnel from inside the hospital rendered first aid to the victim, identified as Dr. George Seese, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

A preliminary investigation showed both men shared a mutual love interest, according to police.

Dr. Seese was confronted at his car by Wood. Wood shot Dr. Seese and walked to his vehicle, which was parked behind and shot himself.

Police said Dr. Seese was not a full-time staff doctor at the hospital. The doctor had a medical office in Perry Township.

The hospital and nearby schools went into lockdown after the shooting.

The hospital released the following statement:

A shooting took place outside our hospital earlier this afternoon. The Massillon police were immediately dispatched to our parking lot and detectives are continuing to actively investigate the scene. For the safety of patients, staff and visitors, the hospital was on lockdown for a period of time. The police have since cleared the facility and the hospital is no longer on lockdown.

Though our hospital is designed to be a place of healing, we conduct regular drills to prepare for events such as today’s unfortunate situation. Our staff throughout the facility quickly responded to this incident by following their training to safeguard patients and visitors to the best of their ability. At this time, patient care continues in our hospital.
