OSU Marching Band Performs Without Fired Director

The OSU Marching Band performed for the first time since director Jon Waters was fired. See the support from the crowd.

The Ohio State University marching band made its first performance without the former band director Jon Waters leading the way Friday night.
The marching band performed at Picnic with The Pops at Columbus Commons. It comes just one day after Ohio State removed Waters as the band's director.

A report released by the university Thursday said Waters did not do enough to stop a culture of sexual harassment and alcohol abuse that existed within the band.

Most people 10TV spoke with at Friday night's concert said they were saddened by what happened.

They said they wanted to put their sadness aside to support the band members for all of their hard work.

"We're here to support them because it's all about them," said Alan Sacolick, who arrived decked out in his Buckeye band gear. "We love the Ohio State marching band."

As the father of a former band member, Sacolick heard his son talk about band life under former director Waters.

"He's really been a good influence on the kids, certainly on my son, and has definitely enriched my son's life through music and performance as well as learning a lot about leadership," Sacolick said of Waters.

Some fans said they won't allow the reports of sexual harassment and alcohol abuse within the band to diminish their support of Waters.

"I think that these things have happened for a long time and unfortunately he's taking the brunt of this," said Lisa Hartshorn, an OSU grad and fan of the band.

"I totally support the band, the Buckeyes," said Nancy Vaughan, another fan of the band.  "It's what it's all about."
