Ohio's new standard issue license plate design will change in June, the state's registrar ofmotor vehicles announced Wednesday.
The license plates, titled "Beautiful Ohio," will replace the "Sunburst" red, white and bluedesign that has been available since March 2004.
According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, motorists who prefer the "Sunburst" designwill have the option of purchasing new or replacement plates in that design scheme for a limitedtime.
"Since its introduction, sales of the "Beautiful Ohio" plate have outpaced sales of the Sunburstplate by a three-to-one margin," said Carolyn Williams, the Ohio Registrar of Motor Vehicles. "As a result, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has received numerous requests from Ohioans that theBeautiful Ohio plate be made available as a special and personalized plate."
The "Beautiful Ohio" plate became available in November as an option to Ohio's standard issue"Sunburst" plate, and is not a mandatory replacement for Ohio BMV customers; it is an option forthose with current registrations to replace their current plates.
During the first four months of its release, Ohioans have purchased nearly 800,000 "BeautifulOhio" plates.
The "Beautiful Ohio" design for logo, initial reserve and personalized plates differs slightlyfrom the standard design, featuring the distinct top portion of the design on a whitebackground.
Ohioans who prefer the "Sunburst" plate will be able to purchase logo, initial reserve andpersonalized plates in that design through June 6.
New registrations will continue to have the option of choosing either the "Sunburst" or the"Beautiful Ohio" plate in standard issue combinations through Nov. 30.
