Ohio State says it will work to end the iconic Mirror Lake jump after a student died during the annual event.

This comes after Ohio State University says a man suffered cardiac arrest and died after plunging into the freezing cold waters of Mirror Lake early Wednesday morning.

Columbus Police told 10TV the man had to be pulled from the lake during the annual jump following the medical emergency.

Ohio State University Director of Public Safety Vernon Baisden released a statement shortly after the incident, saying the male student was pulled from the frigid waters around 12:20 a.m. and was taken to Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in critical condition.

Around 10:00 a.m., the university confirmed the man had passed away.

Ohio State says it has "tentatively" identified the student, but did not release his name.

In a statment released on Wednesday, the school say it will likely put an to end the annual Mirror Lake jump.

"In spite of significant efforts taken to make this event a safer one, this tragedy has occurred. We must come together and acknowledge that while this is a student-led tradition that has been passed down through the years, we cannot risk another tragedy. University leadership strongly agrees that we will work with our campus community to end this annual event."

The Mirror Lake jump is not a university-sanctioned event.

“We are heartbroken over this horrible tragedy. We have tentatively identified the young man as a student and are in the process of reaching out to his family," said President Michael Drake. "During this difficult time, counseling services will be made available throughout the holiday weekend for those who seek support."
