Ohio law enforcement considers Memorial Day the deadliest weekend on the roads

The wet weather and heavy holiday traffic on Saturday made a mess of the roads throughout central Ohio.

State law enforcement said historically, the Memorial Day weekend is the deadliest summer holiday weekend on the roads.

As drivers head toward their holiday destinations, OSHP Sergeant Tiffany Coriell wants to make sure drivers make it there safely.

"At the end of the day we want to go home to our families and we want the motorists of Ohio to go home to theirs,” Coriell said.

The official start of summer comes with a deadly reputation on the roads.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 16 fatal crashes in 2015 on the roads during the Memorial Day weekend. In 2014, there were 13 fatal wrecks and in 2013 OSHP reported 18.

More troopers will be out this weekend and working extra hours.

"I think message the highway patrol wants to send it out is, be safe,” Coriell said.

While keeping watch on high volume traffic in Delaware County Saturday, a driver rear-ended Sgt. Coriell’s cruiser.

"The smallest focus that's taken off the road and onto something else can change a moment in time, and one of those moments in time was today while I was on patrol, stopped at an intersection I was rear ended by another vehicle,” she said.

AAA projects more than 38 million people will travel this Memorial Day weekend, thousands of them could drive through central Ohio where Coriell will be patrolling.

“A lot of those areas are seeing a high volume of traffic and crashes. We just need people to slow down and be safe and have patience out there on the roadways,” Coriell said.

The National Click it or Ticket Enforcement is also underway, and goes until June 5. The Ohio State Patrol says it will have a zero tolerance policy for those not wearing a seatbelt.
