Texas man celebrating birthday, anniversary in Houston killed in hit-and-run

Dustin Dorcz was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on Sept. 15. The driver didn't stay at the scene and Dustin's widow wants justice.

HOUSTON — Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a man celebrating his birthday and anniversary in Houston. Right now, family and friends said they are fighting to get justice for the victim, Dustin Dorcz.

Houston police said, as of now, there is no official suspect or vehicle description. All we know is the crash took place in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near downtown and the suspect’s vehicle was seen swerving in and out of traffic.

Video provided to KHOU 11 shows a major scene Lindsey Dorcz said she can’t bring herself to think of.

"I’ve been in a haze for the last eight days without my husband," Lindsey said.

Lindsey and her husband are from Lufkin but were in Houston last week celebrating five years together as well as Dustin’s birthday.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 15, the husband and father-of-six was walking on the shoulder of I-10 eastbound when he was hit and killed.

"We did talk to the witness and the witness was very adamant my husband was very close to the guardrail, far away from the roadway," Lindsey said.

Sgt. Dallas, with the Houston Police Department Vehicular Crimes Division, provided some updates on the night of the fatal crash.

"We did have a witness who stayed on scene. Unfortunately, the driver in that area did leave," Dallas said.

"If that person is watching this, maybe God can work on you and you can give my husband the justice he deserves and come clean," Lindsey said.

Lindsey said she was not with her husband when the crash happened. When she spoke with KHOU 11 News reporter Amanda Henderson on Monday afternoon, she wore Dustin’s wedding ring around her neck and she said there are several questions she now wants answers to.

"I just can’t imagine leaving someone behind like that," Lindsey said.

In 2023, 807 pedestrians were killed in crashes across Texas. Lindsey said as she is navigating her new life without her husband she wants to fight for a safer tomorrow in his name.

"We’re going to figure it out because this should not happen -- lives should not be taken. Think about my family that is suffering right now ... think about my children who don’t have their dad," Lindsey said.

Right now, police said if you have any information you are asked to call HPD’s Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4065 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
