More than 700 pounds of bologna seized near Texas-Mexico border

Officers noticed the woman's suitcases were heavier than normal during a second exam.

PRESIDIO, Texas — A woman was caught trying to smuggle a massive amount of bologna and prescription drugs into Texas.

The 43-year-old woman, who was not identified by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, was busted Monday afternoon at the Presidio port of entry, which is about 100 miles west of Big Bend National Park.

According to officials, the woman only declared a cooked meal during her primary inspection. However, officers noticed during a second exam that her suitcases seemed heavier than normal.

The suitcases were removed from the car and opened, which led to the discovery of 40 rolls of Mexican bologna, weighing 748 pounds. During their investigation, border patrol officers also found 280 boxes of undeclared prescription medications hidden inside various panels of the woman's SUV. Officers seized numerous drugs including Tramadol, Alprazolam, Clonazapam and Diazapam.

During the stop, officers also discovered more than $7,600 in cash hidden in the vehicle, which was also seized. Officers said the woman was given a $1,000 civil penalty for the incident and the bologna was destroyed.
