WASHINGTON D.C., DC — A sea of white in the crowd at President Biden's State of the Union address Thursday was a statement from the Democratic Women's Caucus, who announced that many members would wear white outfits for women's rights as well as "Fighting for Reproductive Freedom" pins.
“Our message is clear: women must be able to access the health care they need to control their own lives and futures. That means women, not politicians, should be in charge of whether, when, and how to start or grow their families," Democratic Women's Caucus chair Lois Frankel said in a news release. "That includes access to birth control, access to abortion, and access to IVF.”
This isn't the first time recently that women in Congress have worn white to make a statement at the State of the Union address. In 2020, Democratic women made the fashion statement to "stand against President Trump's dangerous policies" and "make sure the voices of women and families are heard."
Historically, the suffragettes of the 20th century wore white to protest their right to vote. Their efforts let to the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 granting them that right.
