The simpler infotainment systems are proven to be the safest ones for the driver to use while driving, according to new research from AAA.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety teamed up with researchers from the University of Utah to evaluate how automakers' infotainment systems distract drivers. Despite improvements to the new technology, they still take drivers' eyes off the road and the mind off driving for too long.

Researchers found Apple CarPlay and Android Auto vehicle infotainment are less distracting than many of the built-in systems found in 2017 and 2018 vehicles.

Researchers used a rating scale to measure the demands on each system and the time it took drivers to complete a task on it. Both the CarPlay and Android Auto generate an overall moderate level of demand, while the native vehicle systems created a very high levels of demand.

The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use assistant software like Siri and Google Assistant, resulting in faster response times.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends drivers lock out high-demand functions, such as programming navigation and text messaging, while driving.
